Industry Leaders Choose NC Group for Pearson-Approved HNC in Engineering

North East-based training provider NC Group recently announced it secured formal approval from Pearson, the UK’s leading awarding body, to deliver Level 4 Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) in Engineering, making it one of a select group of independent training providers in the UK with this status.

It is now pleased to welcome twelve learners from global to regional employers, including 3M, Katmex, Ineos, Harrison Packaging, Ricor North East, Hydram, Pragmatic Maintenance & Reliability, and the Invest People Group.

“We’re delighted to see such strong demand for the HNC in Engineering,” said Liam Noble, Managing Director at NC Group. “When we secured Pearson approval, our goal was to expand progression pathways beyond Level 3 Apprenticeships for both our learners and employers. To welcome twelve learners from such a high calibre of companies shows the confidence industry has in our approach.”

The HNC in Engineering is, in general, equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree. It is a Level 4 Steve Harrison, Lead Practitioner, NC Group, with the September cohort of HNC in Engineering learners.qualification, focusing on both practical and vocational skills required for the related sectors, and it is completed part-time over two years. After completing the HNC, learners can progress to a Higher National Diploma (HND), which is equivalent to the second year of a degree, or apply to enter the second year of a bachelor’s degree programme.

The HNC course is delivered flexibly to meet the needs of both learners and employers. NC Group’s model avoids the limitations of traditional college day release, instead providing training that fits around shift patterns and workplace schedules. Delivery is led by highly experienced industry practitioners, ensuring learners gain both academic knowledge and real-world insight.

“We are providing an educational pathway that works for learners and employers,” continued Liam. “Small cohort sizes mean each learner benefits from tailored support, while businesses know their staff are developing skills directly relevant to their sector.”

Learners can study for the HNC as part of a Level 4 Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship, a Level 4 Lead Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, or as a standalone HNC in Engineering. All offer specialist pathways in areas such as fabrication and welding, as well as electrical and mechanical engineering. Depending on the business size and course route, the programme can be fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy, or for smaller businesses, 95% government funding is available, or 100% for learners aged 16–18. Alternatively, it is available as a commercial course with flexible payment options.

This latest milestone builds on NC Group’s growing reputation as a trusted partner in engineering, manufacturing and leadership training. Earlier this year, the business was rated Outstanding by Ofsted across all five key judgement areas and continues to strengthen its offer with new qualifications and an expanding employer base.

NC Group is now preparing for future intakes and encourages employers and learners to register their interest early.
