The relationship between people and machines is evolving, and it will change almost every facet of human existence in the coming years. Perhaps the most profound change, however, will be to how humans think about the role of work in their lives.

How Automation, AI and Machine Learning will revolutionise the world of work is a new book by Anthony Wheeler and Ronald Buckley that looks how the relationship between people and machines is evolving

For all those thinking ‘it will never happen’ to me, HR Without People? Industrial evolution in the age of automation, AI and Machine Learning demonstrates how even professions seen as ‘safe career’ choices will be impacted by the advance of AI and machine learning. The authors, leading professors Anthony Wheeler and Ronald Buckley, warn that the pace of automation, AI and machine learning is fundamentally altering the lifecycle of jobs and the structure of organisations in a way that business leaders simply cannot ignore.

This important new book starts with a look at the role of work in our lives and the present status and use of these technologies, before taking a glimpse into a technological future where jobs and careers will look fundamentally different and whole sections of society will no longer have access to work as we know it.

Michael Buckley
Michael Buckley

HR Without People? Industrial evolution in the age of automation, AI and Machine Learning sets out how workforces will change, industries and education will adapt and governments will experiment with forms of basic universal income.

So, as work and business evolves away from mass employment, training, developing and rewarding of people,

Anthony Wheeler

how will the role of the HR professional change? Wheeler and Buckley predict that HR professionals will play an increasingly important role, becoming not just technologists who can operate legacy HR systems, but a pivotal function that will help governments, organisations and societies create meaningful life opportunities and experiences for citizens.

They argue that as machines replace so much of what humans do for work, the creative spirit of humans will rise to the challenge and create a second Renaissence!

HR Without people? Industrial evolution in the age of automation, AI and Machine Learning  by Anthony Wheeler and Ronald Buckley is part of Emerald Publishing’s The Future of Work series. Out now priced £24.
