Advice for businesses looking to export in 2025

As we begin a new year, business leaders may be considering how they can build and expand their companies.  In order to do this, many will choose to look beyond the UK.

Taking the plunge in selling internationally can often seem more daunting than it needs to be. For those thinking ahead, and looking to take the leap to begin their exporting journey, International Trade Advisors from the Department of Business and Trade (DBT) have provided their tips on how to get started and hit the ground running in 2025.

Estelle Dingley, International Trade Advisor, DBT Southern England Region and Simon Bedford, International Trade Advisor, DBT Northern Powerhouse share their tips below.

  1. Prepare thoroughly: Have a clear export strategy, set a budget, and research markets and competition.
  2. Seek support: Use freight forwarders, the Department for Business and Trade’s free services, and Chambers of Commerce for advice and connections.
  3. Know your market: Localise products, understand cultural differences, and tailor communication.
  4. Go online: Use e-commerce, data analytics, and local platforms to boost visibility and sales.
  5. Learn from peers’ mistakes: Focus on one market, price smartly, ensure secure payments, and connect with peers.
