The rise of the entrepreneurial lawyer – and how SMEs can benefit

Dan Adams, co-founder of legal services provider, Arbor Law, explores the opportunities available for a lawyer with an entrepreneurial mind.

From the start of my career as a lawyer, I knew I wanted to do things differently. Early on, I felt confined to the proverbial cupboard, spending my days dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s of contracts. While important, this lacked fulfilment for me. I craved the challenge of building something, of creating value beyond the predictable grind of traditional legal roles.

Entrepreneurial lawyers are defined by their willingness to take risks, their hunger for growth and their ability to see the bigger picture. They go beyond the confines of technical legal work to build businesses, nurture relationships and provide solutions that deliver real value. These lawyers enjoy the challenge of expanding their networks and client bases while maintaining control over their professional lives.

This autonomy is not just liberating, but also financially empowering. It’s about owning your destiny and crafting a practice that aligns with your goals and passions.

 Breaking free from constraints

The traditional paths for lawyers — in-house roles or positions in law firms — offer stability, but can also stifle entrepreneurial ambitions. These lawyers often operate as risk managers, focused on compliance and control, which can feel counterintuitive to someone driven by innovation and opportunity. While these roles provide job security and predictability, they rarely satisfy the entrepreneurial itch.

Lawyers in traditional firms face a different set of constraints. Billing by the hour creates a natural ceiling on income as there are only so many hours in a day. Scaling a practice is nearly impossible without the right support.

The entrepreneurial lawyer

Entrepreneurial lawyers are not just legal advisors; they are business builders and partners in growth. My personal experience has shown how legal expertise can open doors to deeper involvement with businesses.

Often, I start by providing legal advice but, as I build relationships with founders, I’m invited to contribute in broader ways—sometimes as a non-executive director or even a shareholder. This hybrid role allows entrepreneurial lawyers to leverage their skills in unique and fulfilling ways.

At Arbor Law, we encourage this approach. We help our lawyers create and stick to business plans, providing accountability and regular engagement to ensure they hit their targets. Whether you want to lead projects, manage teams, or take an active interest in the businesses you support, we give you the tools and flexibility to make it happen.

Balancing risk and reward

Entrepreneurialism goes hand in hand with risk, a concept many lawyers are trained to avoid. However, the entrepreneurial lawyer doesn’t just manage risk — they embrace it intelligently. They help clients make informed decisions, balancing caution with opportunity. This mindset requires resilience and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Unlike traditional roles where you can check in and out with minimal personal stakes, being an entrepreneurial lawyer means taking ownership of your successes and failures.

I often wonder whether entrepreneurialism is an innate quality or if it can develop. Personally, I lean toward the idea that it’s intrinsic. Not everyone is wired to take risks and face the uncertainties that come with building a business. For every 100 lawyers, there might only be one true entrepreneur. That said, for those who have the mindset, firms like Arbor Law provide the perfect ecosystem.

A new way forward

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone — and you might just be an entrepreneurial lawyer. At Arbor Law, we’ve created an environment where lawyers like you can thrive, building careers that are dynamic, rewarding and entirely self-directed. At Arbor Law, we provide the infrastructure to make this possible. From business planning to skill development, we support entrepreneurial lawyers in every aspect of building and scaling their practices.

If you’re a lawyer with an entrepreneurial mindset, and you’re interested in joining the Arbor Law team, visit the website for more information.
