The workplace changes that could help businesses retain neurodivergent talent

Neuroinclusion is becoming a growing priority for employers, with two in five (40%) neuroinclusive businesses reporting better retention when inclusive support is embedded into the workplace.

To help businesses build more inclusive workplaces, assistive technology experts, Everway, have shared new advice exploring why neuroinclusion matters and the practical steps HR leaders can take to create environments where everyone can thrive.

Neuroinclusion is not only about supporting employees. When workplaces are designed to work for a wider range of thinking styles, organisations can improve how they attract, retain and engage talent.

HR leaders can start by putting neuroinclusion into practice through:

1. Creating a culture where different thinking styles are valued
Leaders can build trust by talking openly about neurodiversity, focusing on strengths and making it clear that support and adjustments are a normal part of an inclusive workplace.

2. Making hiring more accessible
Reviewing job descriptions, interview processes and candidate experiences can help remove unnecessary barriers and allow businesses to identify potential beyond traditional hiring methods.

3. Building supportive onboarding from day one
Clear expectations, structured guidance, written information and regular check-ins can help new employees feel confident and supported from the start.

4. Offering practical workplace adjustments
Simple changes, such as flexible working approaches, clearer communication, quiet spaces and accessible tools, can help employees work in ways that suit them.

5. Using technology to remove barriers
Inclusive tools can support communication, organisation, focus and productivity, helping adapt work around people rather than expecting people to adapt to work.

6. Making support ongoing
Neuroinclusion is not a one-off initiative. Regular conversations, manager training and reviewing support as needs change can help create a workplace where people continue to thrive.

Cathy Donnelly, Chief People Officer at Everway, comments: “Creating a neuroinclusive workplace is no longer a nice-to-have; it is a business priority. When people can work in ways that suit how their minds work, they are more likely to feel supported, stay engaged and do their best work.

“For HR leaders, neuroinclusion is about more than policies. It shapes how organisations hire, onboard, support and retain their people. It is not about getting everything perfect overnight. Small, practical changes, like clearer communication, flexible ways of working and accessible tools, can make a big difference.

“When workplaces are designed with different minds in mind, everyone benefits. People feel more included, teams become stronger, and businesses create the conditions for more people to thrive.”
