Is Your Business Still Dependent on You for Everything?

Shweta Jhajharia is a business coach and entrepreneur who has spent nearly twenty years helping business owners build companies that are more profitable, scalable, and less dependent on their founders. As the creator of the 6M Growth Model, she brings a structured lens to a problem many owners face but rarely name: being so deeply embedded in daily operations that growth stalls rather than accelerates. In this piece, she unpacks that model, six interconnected areas spanning mindset, mastery, mission, money, management, and methodology, and offers a practical way for owners to identify which one is actually holding their business back, rather than spreading their attention thin across all six at once.

After almost two decades of coaching business owners across a wide range of industries, I’ve noticed a frustrating pattern.

That the owner is still doing almost everything.

They are approving decisions, solving problems, managing people, checking the numbers, dealing with clients and stepping in whenever something goes wrong.

The business has become bigger, but the owner hasn’t necessarily gained any more freedom.

So I often ask:

If you stepped away from your business for a month, would it continue to run effectively without you?

If the answer is no, the problem may not be a lack of ambition or even a lack of strategy. It may be that the strategy hasn’t been translated into the way the business actually operates.

That gap between knowing what needs to happen and making it happen consistently is where many businesses get stuck.

The 6M Model for Growth & Freedom

This is why I developed the 6M Growth Model: to help business owners look at growth as a whole rather than focusing on one isolated area.

The model looks at six key aspects:

  1. Mindset – how the owner thinks about themselves, their business and their own role within it. As the business grows, the owner’s mindset and habits often need to evolve with it.
  2. Mastery – having the knowledge, skills and understanding required to run the business effectively and make informed decisions as it grows.
  3. Mission – having clear goals for the business and a practical action plan for achieving them, so everyone understands where the business is going and what needs to happen next.
  4. Money – having effective marketing and sales systems to attract the right customers, convert them and generate sustainable revenue.
  5. Management – finding, developing and retaining the right people, while creating an environment where both the team and the business can grow.
  6. Methodology – identifying what can be packaged, documented and systemised so the business can operate consistently and the owner can move from working in the business to working on it.

These six areas are interconnected and sit across two sides of growth: strategic thinking and execution.

Mindset, Mastery and Mission are about strategic thinking. Money, Management and Methodology are about execution.

Some businesses have a strong strategy but struggle to execute it. Others are excellent at execution but lack the clarity to direct their efforts effectively.

That is why I don’t believe every business should try to improve all six areas at once.

The question is: where will improvement make the biggest difference?

Find Your Biggest Growth Constraint

You don’t need to launch six new improvement projects.

Start by scoring each area from 1 to 10 based on where your business is today.

Mindset: Am I still behaving like the owner this business needed two years ago, or have I adapted my role as it has grown?

Mastery: What knowledge or capability am I currently missing that is limiting the next stage of growth?

Mission: Are my priorities clear enough that my team knows what we are trying to achieve and what matters most?

Money: Do I have a predictable way of generating and converting profitable opportunities?

Management: Do my people take ownership, or do important decisions and problems still come back to me?

Methodology: If I disappeared for a month, which processes would stop because only I know how they work?

Once you’ve scored each area, don’t simply work on the lowest number.

Instead, ask:

“Which area, if improved, would remove the biggest barrier to my business growing?”

That distinction matters.

A business might score 5/10 for marketing but 7/10 for management. Improving marketing may bring in more customers, but if the existing team cannot handle the additional demand, growth could create more problems rather than solve them.

Another business might have strong sales but weak methodology. More customers would simply create more work for an owner who is already stretched.

The aim is not to improve everything at once. It is to identify the constraint that is limiting the business most right now, then focus your time and resources there.

Once that constraint is addressed, reassess the six areas. Your biggest constraint may have changed.

So if your business is growing but you are working longer hours, approving everything and becoming more involved, don’t simply ask how you can generate more revenue.

Step back and ask:

What is currently preventing my business from operating without me?

The answer may tell you far more about the next stage of your business growth than your revenue figure does.
