Let’s Talk – Business In Profile, Paul Day, Filestream.

One rarely meets someone with a remarkable career trajectory—such as starting as a delivery driver and later becoming Managing Director of the same company. Paul Day did just that, beginning his journey at Filestream Ltd as a van driver and, over the course of 25 years, working Paul Day, Managing Director at Filestream Ltd his way up to become Managing Director.

This progression provides Paul with unique insights when engaging with fellow entrepreneurs, business owners, and employees. His experience transitioning from employee to employer has equipped him with valuable knowledge and understanding that resonates with those working in Britain’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Paul’s down-to-earth and honest approach makes him relatable to businesses with a growth mindset. Having recently completed the London Marathon in support of a local charity, Paul is now preparing for his keynote speaking engagements at the Great British Expos. We recently caught up with him for a Q&A, and the conversation offers attendees a brief look at the valuable insights they will gain from Paul’s experiences and perspectives:

  1. How long have you been in this business or industry?

I’ve been in this industry for nearly 30 years. Over that time, I’ve seen a lot change—whether in the way businesses are run, the challenges we face, or how teams work together. Those years have given me a solid understanding of the industry and shaped how I approach both leadership and day-to-day decisions. It’s been a long journey, but one I’m still very much invested in.

2. What products and services does your business offer?

We provide document management software that helps businesses organise, store, and access their files more efficiently. Our system is built with data protection in mind, making it easier for companies to stay compliant with GDPR and other regulations. It’s designed to improve day-to-day workflow, reduce admin time, and keep sensitive information secure. Ultimately, we aim to give businesses more control over their documents so they can focus on running and growing their operations.

3. What do you like most about business?

What I enjoy most is helping businesses work more efficiently—saving time, reducing costs, and improving the way they manage information. Data security plays a big part in that. When systems are secure and well-structured, it not only protects what matters but also gives companies the confidence to focus on growth and innovation. Being part of that process is something I find genuinely rewarding.

4. How do you measure success?

For me, success isn’t just about personal achievements—it’s about helping others reach their potential. I take a lot of satisfaction in supporting people, sharing what I’ve learned, and seeing others grow as a result. When you can make a positive difference in someone else’s journey, whether that’s in business or beyond, that’s a real measure of success. It’s about progress, not just for yourself, but for the people around you.

5. At what point did you look at your business and consider it a success?

I started to see it as a success when clients began telling us how much our software was helping them—how easy it was to use and how it made a real difference in their day-to-day work. That kind of feedback means a lot because it shows we’re building something that genuinely meets their needs. It’s a reminder that keeping things simple and effective really does matter, and it pushes us to keep improving.

6. What do you think is the significant challenge facing small businesses today?

One of the biggest challenges for small businesses right now is data security. The risk of cyberattacks is very real, and a serious breach can damage not just your systems, but your reputation as well. For SMEs, building trust is everything, so it’s essential to have proper security measures in place. Protecting your data isn’t just about avoiding problems—it’s about showing customers and partners that you take their information, and your business, seriously.

7. What was your biggest mistake in Business, and what did you learn from it?

Looking back, one of my biggest regrets is not paying enough attention to work-life balance in the early years. It’s easy to get caught up in long hours and constant demands, but time with family—especially when your kids are young—is something you can’t get back. I’ve learned that real success means building a career that supports your life, not one that takes over it. It’s a lesson I try to keep in mind and share with others whenever I can.

8. What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?

Starting a business requires strategic planning, honesty, and authenticity. It’s essential to remember that business is fundamentally about relationships; people prefer doing business with those they trust and connect with. By staying true to yourself and maintaining transparency, you build a foundation of trust that will foster long-term success. Always keep your business plans detailed and clear, as preparation is key to navigating challenges.

9. How do you deal with fear and doubt?

When I face fear or doubt, I take the time to carefully weigh my options and consider the risks involved. Doing thorough research helps me make decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. This way, I feel more confident moving forward, knowing I’ve prepared as much as possible. Breaking things down like this helps reduce uncertainty and keeps me focused on making choices that support my goals.

10. What qualities do you think every entrepreneur should possess?

Passion is absolutely essential for any entrepreneur. It’s what keeps you dedicated and motivated, even when things get tough. Being passionate about what you do helps you push through challenges and keeps your energy alive. It also inspires the people around you and helps build a strong, committed team. At the end of the day, passion is the foundation that supports everything else in a successful business.

11. What habits helped make you successful?

Honesty and reliability have been cornerstones of my professional success. By going the extra mile and sharing valuable knowledge at no cost, I’ve been able to effectively support others in achieving their business goals. This approach not only builds trust but also fosters long-term relationships. In business these habits stand out as essential qualities.

12. What mindsets helped make you succeed?

Loyalty, helpfulness, and charity have always guided me in my work. These values shape how I approach business and how I connect with others. Staying true to them helps build trust and encourages teamwork, which I believe are essential for long-term success. Focusing on supporting others and creating a positive environment has made a real difference in both my career and the relationships I’ve built.

13. Who is your biggest role model & why?

I have been fortunate to learn from many individuals throughout my life, but my parents stand out as my primary role models. They instilled in me the importance of understanding right from wrong and emphasised that hard work is the key to achieving any goal. Their guidance has shaped my work ethic and principles.

14.  Finally, when is your next keynote, and why should business people visit on the day?

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at all of this year’s Great British Expos. I look forward to connecting with regional businesses and entrepreneurs in Windsor, Swindon, Manchester, Reading, and Bristol. These one-day events  are a great opportunity for business owners, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking to grow their career or start a business. It’s a chance to connect, learn, and get inspired.
