Bupa launches DNA-led pathways to prevent cancer, heart disease and diabetes

Bupa becomes the first major private healthcare provider to launch DNA-led services to help people understand their genetic risk of serious disease and take action years before symptoms appear.
From 1 September 2026, Bupa will offer ‘Prevention Pathways’ for breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, alongside its recently launched Medication Check service, with 200,000 people expected to benefit by the end of 2027.
Where someone is deemed high-risk, the service includes access to specialist support, preventive treatment and potentially life-saving surgeries, redefining the role of private medical insurance.
The launch marks a crucial first step towards more personalised healthcare, moving beyond a treatment-led, one-size-fits-all approach where action is taken after illness has developed, towards personalised prevention for every individual that intervenes before a condition develops.
Breast cancer remains one of the UK’s most common cancers, responsible for 15% of all new cancer cases and 30% of all new cases in women. Bupa’s breast cancer pathway now enables those at high-risk to take informed action earlier, with access to personalised interventions including medication such as Tamoxifen, or risk-reducing surgeries like a mastectomy.
Dr Rebecca Rohrer, Clinical Innovation and Genomics Director for Bupa, said: “By using modern innovation to truly understand a person’s DNA, these pathways fundamentally change how we approach healthcare. Where someone is at a genetically increased risk of serious disease, we’re now able to support them in taking early, informed action, potentially years before symptoms appear.
“By helping people get ahead of serious diseases like breast cancer, we also help to reduce the likelihood of needing intensive treatments later, and spare people the shock of a life-changing diagnosis that often comes without warning.”
Bupa’s breast cancer pathway also looks to help respond to rising rates of breast cancer among younger adults. Recent research found that several early-onset cancers are becoming more common in younger generations, and may be linked to lifestyle and environmental factors that accelerate biological ageing. While the study did not find the same link for breast cancer, cases among younger people have still increased by 14%, further highlighting the importance of understanding family history and genetic risks, including BRCA gene mutations, and taking preventive action earlier in life.
Dr Rohrer continued: “With the number of people diagnosed with cancers such as breast cancer continuing to grow, it has never been more important for people to understand their individual health risks earlier in life, enabling informed decisions about prevention, screening and long-term health.”
Bupa’s breast cancer pathway is expected to support more than 36,000 people by the end of 2027 and incorporates testing for genes including BRCA. Of those, more than 4,000 are estimated to be deemed high-risk and offered access to potentially lifesaving preventive medication and treatment to help stop cancer developing.
Dan Sullivan, Product and Proposition Director for Bupa Insurance, said: “The opening of our Prevention Pathways marks a significant milestone for healthcare, as Bupa becomes the first major private medical insurer to offer fully integrated, personalised genomics-led care and preventive treatment as part of its standard cover.
“Good health today is no guarantee against future illness, and DNA can reveal inherited risks long before signs or symptoms appear. Now, for the first time, an insurer is providing health cover to support people in understanding health risks in advance and proactively accessing treatment to prevent disease.
“The switch to preventive health is already being evidenced through the significant uptake of our Medication Check product, with over 10,000 tests already ordered since June and 70,000 people set to benefit by the end of 2027, helping people get the right medication, at the right dose, first time.
“Our Prevention Pathways for breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are a pivotal step for healthcare, giving people the ability to make early and informed decisions, and take decisive action to extend their long-term health.”
Set to benefit more than 95,000 people by the end of 2027, Bupa’s diabetes and cardiovascular disease pathways also open from 1 September 2026, using genetic and metabolic testing to identify risks and inform personalised next steps and risk-reducing treatments based on results.
For those at increased risk, this can include appointments with Bupa GPs, lifestyle coaching, and £400 of funding to support to access Bupa’s Weight Management Plan including GLP-1 weight loss medication; enabling earlier intervention at a crucial time with conditions such as type 2 diabetes affecting growing numbers of younger people.
In June, Bupa launched Medication Check for customers taking regular medication, determining which medications are most likely to be effective, ineffective or cause side effects based on a person’s genomic makeup. Approximately 10,000 tests have already ordered with an estimated 70,000 people set to benefit by the end of 2027, and 28% anticipated to make long-term medication changes based on results.
As the first major private healthcare provider to explore whole genome sequencing, the pathways build on Bupa’s investment in a growing range of genomics-led services, including its DNA Health Check. Available to Bupa and non-Bupa customers, the DNA Health Check uses Polygenic Risk Scoring to assess an individual’s genetic risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, informing conversations with a GP about any areas of concern, as well as recommended screening options and lifestyle advice.
