Educational packs developed by allergy sufferer and campaigner Julianne Ponan MBE and the Benedict Blythe Foundation have been selected by the Department for Education as supporting materials for the UK’s national Breakfast Clubs programme, which is due to roll out in April.
The inclusion of the ‘ABC’ packs (Allergy Breakfast Club) marks a significant step towards ensuring the Breakfast Club scheme is safe and accessible for children with food or drink allergies.
To date well over 280,000 children at schools across the UK have been given the ‘course’ and delivered voluntarily by Julianne, Helen Blythe and other volunteers.
Julianne, who is the founder and CEO of Creative Nature as well as long-standing allergy campaigner, said the announcement has huge personal significance.
“As someone who grew up with severe allergies, I know first-hand how isolating food can feel at school. You can
find yourself treated differently because of allergies, intolerances or anaphylaxis. A programme like this would have meant everything to me as a child. Seeing the government take real steps to make breakfast clubs safe and genuinely inclusive for children with allergies is incredibly powerful and long overdue,” she said.
Since November 2025, the ABC packs have been available to pilot schools, supporting the early stages of the government initiative and helping schools consider the safety and needs of pupils with allergies as breakfast clubs expand nationwide.
With one in 12 children in the UK now living with a food allergy, safe and inclusive provision at the start of the school day is increasingly recognised as essential.
Helen Blythe of the Benedict Blythe Foundation said the selection of the ABC packs reflects growing awareness of allergy safety in schools.
“It’s an honour for our ABC packs to be selected to support the breakfast club rollouts. It shows the government’s commitment to ensuring these programmes are safe and inclusive for children with allergies, which is so important,” she said.
Creative Nature has worked closely with partners and schools to embed allergy awareness, education and practical tools into the breakfast club programme. The ABC packs are designed to help schools reassure families while creating an environment where all children can take part safely.
