The top side hustles set to dominate 2025 (no big investment needed!)

Posted By sme-admin on January 6, 2025 Features

As the cost of living continues to rise in the UK, many people may consider side hustles to boost their income over the course of 2025.

Recent research highlights the increasing financial strain, which is driving 45% of UK individuals to use additional income streams to cover day-to-day living costs.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that more than three-quarters of people in the UK believe working a 9-5 job while running a money-making enterprise is the new normal.

That said, which is the best side hustle to start? And what do you need to be aware of when starting a side business? The money.co.uk business bank accounts experts have analysed numerous side hustles and offered their tips to reveal everything you need to know.

The top 3 side hustles where you can make money with minimal or no upfront investment:

Searches for ‘how to sell on Vinted’ skyrocketed by 166% in the last year, showing a massive interest in the resale market. To start, clean out your wardrobe or collect vintage finds and list them on platforms like Vinted or Depop. Good photography and an understanding of trends can help your items stand out with little to no upfront cost involved.

With a 37% increase in searches, becoming a driver for Uber (or another platform) remains popular. You’ll need a suitable vehicle, a clean driving record, and to pass a background check. The flexibility of working hours is a significant draw, with earnings varying based on location and time spent driving.

Interest in becoming a tour guide grew by 29% last year. If you have a deep knowledge of your local area and enjoy storytelling, platforms like Airbnb Experiences allow you to create and list unique walking tours. It’s a good way to share your passion for your community while earning extra income.

Searches for ‘digital marketing side hustle’ rose by 79%, highlighting a growing interest in using digital platforms to promote businesses. To start, familiarise yourself with digital marketing fundamentals through free online platforms like Google Digital Garage and social media marketing on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Understanding SEO, content marketing, and email marketing is also crucial. Tools like HubSpot offer free courses and certifications.

With a 78% increase in searches, selling digital products like ebooks, courses, or design templates can be lucrative. Platforms like Etsy for creatives or Teachable and Udemy for course creators are great places to start with no upfront cost. Focusing on creating valuable content and using social media for promotion is critical.

Showing a 46% rise in interest, affiliate marketing involves promoting others’ products for a commission. Platforms such as Amazon Associates or ClickBank offer a good starting point. Building a blog or a social media presence in a specific niche can improve success rates without initial investment.

Kyle Eaton, money.co.uk business bank accounts expert, reveals what you need to consider if you’re aiming to start a business with no money:

  1. Identify your market and niche

“Start with what you know and where you can leverage your skills, experience, or network. Conduct market research to understand your target audience, their needs, and how you can meet them differently or better than existing offerings.

  1. Develop a business plan

“A solid business plan outlines your business idea, market, strategy, and financial projections. It helps clarify your vision and can be crucial if you seek funding or partnerships. Focus on low-cost, high-impact strategies that require minimal upfront investment.

  1. Set up a business bank account

“It’s a good idea to set up a business bank account early on to make it easier to keep track of any expenses and your profits. If you earn more than £1,000 a year from your side hustle you’ll have to complete a self-assessment tax return by 31st January each year, so having a separate business account can help manage this.

  1. Consider getting business insurance

“Business insurance can offer crucial protection for all kinds of side hustles and businesses, including legal costs and compensation claims if you’re sued. This can mitigate risks and allow your business to run smoothly even if you encounter unexpected issues.

  1. Build an online presence

“In today’s digital age, having an online presence is essential. Use free or low-cost tools to build a website and social media platforms to promote your business. Content marketing, like blogging or video tutorials, can also be a powerful tool to attract and engage your target audience.
