Cotswold Personal Trainer Shares Message Of Fun And Inclusivity On National Panel At Retirement Living Show

Stroud-based personal trainer James Hilton, founder of online fitness platform Jim’s Gym, took to the stage at this year’s Retirement Living Show at the NEC in Birmingham, joining sector leaders for a panel discussion on the role of exercise in later life.

The discussion, held on day two of the event, brought together experts from across the UK retirement living sector to explore how fitness, wellbeing and social activities can help residents thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.

James joined Liz Fairbank, Care & Lifestyle Director at McCarthy Stone, and Kate Jarvis, Wellbeing Lead for ExtraCare Charitable Trust, in a conversation that covered accessibility, inclusion, and the importance of keeping activity enjoyable and varied.

When asked about why accessibility matters so much, James explained that while the health benefits of exercise are well known, it’s the enjoyment factor that really keeps people moving.

“The key to getting people moving more isn’t just talking about health benefits, it’s about creating a brilliant experience that people actually look forward to joining every time” said James.

“At Jim’s Gym, we focus on making fitness fun and social. Even online, members can chat to instructors and each other. That sense of connection is what keeps them coming back.”

He went on to highlight how Jim’s Gym has removed many of the traditional barriers to exercise for older adults.

“Anyone can join from anywhere,” he said. “It’s affordable, friendly, and completely accessible from home, which makes it easier for people to stay active without feeling self-conscious or limited by mobility.”

The Retirement Living Show 2025, held in October and now in its third year, brought together operators, developers, local authorities and sector professionals for two days of panels, talks and exhibitions focused on innovation, inclusivity and quality of life within later-living communities.

James said the event was a valuable opportunity to showcase how small changes in approach can make a big difference to people’s health and happiness.

“It was fantastic to be part of a conversation that recognised how much joy, confidence and friendship can come from simply moving together, in person or online,” he said.
