Outgrowing your MSP; businesses need a provider that scales with their growth

To stay competitive, business leaders must align with Managed Service Providers that deliver strategic value, drive innovation, and support to scale.

Now firmly into 2025, it’s becoming clear what HY2 has in store for the IT landscape. For SMBs, the message is clear: business growth must be matched with smarter, more scalable managed services. The demand for cyber-resilient, cloud-first and AI-integrated solutions is no longer a forecast – it’s a reality already shaping business priorities.

According to leading global technology market analyst firm Canalys’ MSP Trends 2025 report, the MSP model is transforming under growing pressure to deliver more strategic value, tighter cybersecurity integration and support for complex hybrid environments as a requirement for modern businesses. Businesses can no longer afford to rely on legacy partnerships that aren’t evolving in step with their needs.

If your current MSP isn’t keeping pace, it may be time to reconsider the relationship.

“Your MSP shouldn’t just keep the lights on anymore – they should help you solve your IT problems strategically and proactively, helping elevate your business to the next stage,” says Stephen Cook, Sales Director at Espria.

“Driving innovation and efficiency is no longer solely the responsibility of the CEO or C-suite; your managed service provider plays a crucial role in shaping the future of your business. An effective MSP brings IT advocacy, aligns technology with business goals, and enhances operational efficiency. By mitigating operational and financial risks, they ensure your business can focus on growth and innovation. Finding an MSP that can deliver these benefits is essential for your success.”

“Many MSPs struggle with skills shortages, legacy toolsets, or restrictive contracts, and can struggle to adapt to business as they evolve with a growing workforce, diverse working locations, or evolving infrastructure needs. Outgrowing your provider is natural; however, sticking with them due to shared history rather than their ability to provide necessary expertise to drive business growth can hinder your operations long-term. Can you afford to leave your business in the hands of a provider that is hindering your growth?”

Cybersecurity needs proactive monitoring, rapid responses

Cook: “SMBs face significant cybersecurity threats, requiring robust protection against sophisticated attacks. Scalability and infrastructure challenges demand modern IT systems that can handle growth and integrate new technologies. Delays in addressing issues or a lack of proactive solutions can lead to costly disruptions and ongoing security risks that your business, particularly SMBs, simply cannot afford.

“Business owners and IT operators cannot settle for simple break-fix service; modern cybersecurity requires strategic partnership, the best-in-show expertise and solutions that are agile enough to meet sophisticated threats head-on. If your MSP isn’t keeping pace with modern security frameworks, or even compliance requirements, your business could be at risk.

“This includes the onset of AI-boosted cyberattacks. Cyber actors aren’t all getting smarter, but AI has boosted the quantity of attacks to hammer on existing vulnerabilities until your defence walls fall. Similarly, having a cybersecurity solution that works across your endpoints, which will especially be at risk when expanding your business and accommodating for your workforce needs, is integral.”

Inflexible, stagnant service offerings

Cook, “A one-size-fits-all solution may have worked in the past, but by today’s standards is too rigid in comparison with tailored support designed to meet the specific challenges of your industry. Generic, cookie-cutter approaches will often miss what your business needs in place of offering an ‘out of the box’ solution, something everyone else is using.

“This viewpoint is core when it comes to AI; rather than chasing the buzz of new technology, businesses should instead assess what they need and what will bring them the best ROI. Otherwise, you’re bringing on expensive, high-power technology that isn’t going to bring your business the operational gains needed to justify its purchase.

“Driving innovation with the right cloud and SaaS solutions, automation and AI-boosted machine learning, or digital transformation 2.0 strategies that work within your business environment all require the right provider to spearhead operations. Expert advice from your MSP is needed more than ever; if your provider isn’t advising on new efficiencies and how best to enhance your business, you could be falling behind your competitors.”

The role of the MSP has changed

Cook, “Companies are increasingly perceiving low value from their MSP, feeling that the services delivered do not meet their evolving needs. This perception stems from inadequate support, outdated solutions, and a lack of proactive strategy. As a result, businesses experience hindered growth, as they struggle with unresolved IT issues, security vulnerabilities, and inefficiencies.”

Cook concludes, “The role of the MSP has changed. No longer is it the one setting you on course for your business journey. Instead, MSPs must grow alongside their client businesses, rather than being the obstacle holding up your business growth. IT operators must trust in a partner that works for them, who can not only help in assessing your current IT needs and failings, but provide a detailed, tailored roadmap and expert guidance for onboarding and maintaining future-ready solutions.”
